After focusing on literary output for some time (particularly his books Unofficial Release and To Hear The World With New Eyes), Thomas Bey William Bailey releases his new album A Desperate Expediency. With raw materials first composed on the modular systems at Stockholm’s EMS studios, and with guest vocal recitations by Isabel Arquero on the album’s centerpiece track, these recordings feature an expanded tonal and emotional range in order to treat its primary subject matter, i.e. the rehabilitiation and normalization of torture in the most technically advanced states of the 21st century. Touching on topics as diverse as the Spanish Civil War, the counter-insurgency operations against the Basque separatists ETA, the Milgram experiments on obedience to authority, and the actual neuroscience of “enhanced interrogation,” it is an extended threnody to the modern victims of torture: an institution that refuses to go away even as many optimistic and futurist thinkers proclaim that the “better angels of human nature” have significantly reduced acts of coercive violence in the modern age. The audio mix - mastered by Alex Keller in Austin, Texas - also brings to a conclusion TBWB’s ‘modern conflict trilogy’ whose previous installments included the cassette releases U.U.U.U. and Progressive Lycanthropy.

Após um longo hiato que o fez redirecionar suas energias para esforços literários (em particular seus livros Unofficial Release e To Hear The World With New Eyes), Thomas Bey William Bailey lança seu álbum A Desperate Expediency. Com materiais compostos primeiramente nos sistemas modulares nos estúdios da EMS em Estocolmo, e com recitativos vocais da convidada Isabel Arquero na faixa central, estas gravações contém uma amplitude emocional e tonal expandida com vistas a tratar o seu assunto central: a reabilitação e normalização da tortura nos Estados mais tecnicamente avançados do século XXI. Tocando em tópicos tais como a Guerra Civil Espanhola, as operações de contra-insurgência contra os separatistas bascos do ETA, os experimentos de Milgram sobre a obediência à autoridade, e a neurociência atual das “técnicas aumentadas de interrogatório”, é uma elegia às modernas vítimas da tortura: uma instituição que se recusa a desaparecer, ainda que alguns pensadores otimistas e futuristas proclamam que os “anjos bons da natureza humana” tenham reduzido significativamente atos de violência coercitiva na idade moderna. O mix- masterizado por Alex Keller em Austin, Texas- também traz à conclusão a trilogia dos conflitos modernos de TBWB, cujas partes anteriores incluíram as cassettes U.U.U.U. e Progressive Lycanthropy.
